Obesity warning

Overall there are a variety of factors that play a role in obesity. This makes it a complex health issue to address. Science shows that genetics plays a role in obesity. Genes can directly cause obesity in disorders such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome.

However genes do not always predict future health. Even though many blame their DNA for obesity, genes and behavior may both be needed for a person to be overweight. In some cases multiple genes may increase one’s susceptibility for obesity and require outside factors; such as abundant food supply or little physical activity.

A British study found that if you did inherit a genetic susceptibility to obesity, regular exercise can reduce this risk by 40%. In fact, people who have obesity-prone genes may benefit from increased physical activity more than people whose genes guard against it, according to researchers.

In other words, don’t sit on the couch and blame factors outside of your ability to change. At least try to get more active and eat better before complaining that you’ve been cursed with rebellious genes.
